GEOGRAPHY

High plateaux and mountain ranges such as the Pyrenees and the Sierra Nevada dominate mainland Spain. Running from these heights are several major rivers such as the Ebro, the Duero, the Tagus and the Guadalquivir. The Balearic Islands lie offshore in the Mediterranean while the autonomous Canary Islands are to be found off the African coast.

POLITICS

Spain is a constitutional monarchy, with a hereditary monarch and a parliament with two chambers: the Cortes.
The 1978 constitution values linguistic and cultural diversity within a united Spain. The country is divided into 17 autonomous communities (regions) which all have their own directly elected authorities. In Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, the regional languages have official status alongside the national Spanish language, which is also called Castilian.

HISTORY

In 1492, Grenada, the last Arab stronghold in Spain, was defeated, giving way to the unity of the Spanish kingdom. Isabella and Ferdinand were the monarchs that commissioned Christopher Columbus, who went on to discover America. From this point until the 1600s, Spain was a powerful empire with many colonies around the world. In the early 1700s, Spain lost many of her colonies due to the War of Spanish Succession. From then on, the monarchy has had to struggle in Spain to keep control. In 1978, Spain became a Parlimentary Monarchy, similar to the United Kingdom. The capital is located in Madrid.


ECONOMY

Spain’s service and manufacturing sectors are strong, while agriculture (especially fruit and vegetables, olive oil and wine) and tourism are also very profitable.


FAMOUS PEOPLE

From Velázquez in the 17th century, through Goya in the 18th and 19th, to Picasso, Dali and Miro in the 20th, Spain has a rich artistic culture. Spanish Flamenco music and dance are widely admired around the world while Cervantes' novel Don Quixote is one of the landmarks of modern European literature. Spanish film directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar and Luis Buñuel have received several international prizes.

FOOD AND DRINK
Spanish cuisine is known for its paella (a rice dish with chicken, seafood and vegetables), tortilla (omelette with potatoes) and sangria (red wine served with fruit).

The climate:
In the south the temperature is high. From north to south the temperature rises . In summer there are temperatures about 40°C, often without rain. In Spain the humidity is low, so the hot climate is usually pleasant. (Elisabeth)

Spain is full of regional specialties and delicacies. Some foods are only available in certain regions, other wines and dishes are world famous. In Spain most people eat fish and potatoes. People eat lots of meat and vegetables too. Also in Austria some people and restaurants cook Spainsh food. (Leah)

Football:

Football is the most popular sport in spain. The football teams Barcelona and Real Madrid are the most succesfull teams in Spain. The oldest football club there is Recreativo de Huelva. The first offical football game took place in Sevilla on March 8th 1890. The highest league in Spain is the Primera Division. 2010 Spain won the World Cup. (Jakob)

Flamenco is a description for a group of songs and dancers. It is a traditional Spanish music. The Flamenco has a lot of oriental influence. Flamenco dresses are georgeous and beautiful. Estrella Morente, Nina Pastori and Pastora Soler are famous Flamenco singers.(Andrea)

The Spanish language is regarded as the world language. All over the world more than 447 million people speak Spanish. The Spanish language is written with Latin letters.
